Opposite Poles Attract, Same Poles Repel

For Example:

  • Hold one bar magnet in one hand and another bar magnet in another hand.
  • Bring these magnets close to one another , our hand will feel the force of attraction or repulsion between the poles of the magnets.

Whether a magnet will attract or repel another magnet depends which poles of the magnet are facing each other.

i. When we bring two magnets close to one another in such a way that the North pole of one magnet is close to the North pole of the other magnet, both the magnets repel each other or move away from each other.
Since, North-North poles or South-South poles are similar poles and like poles (or similar poles) repel each other.

ii. When we bring two magnets close to one another in such a way that the north pole of one magnet faces the south pole of another magnet, they attract each other . Since the North pole and south pole are unlike poles , they attract each other.
