Class 9
Chapter 5 Class 9 - The Fundamental Unit of Life

Explain active and passive transport.

Answer:

Active and passive transport play important roles in supplying oxygen, water, nutrients etc to cells and eliminating waste products.

ACTIVE TRANSPORT

PASSIVE TRANSPORT

Active transport is required for movement of compounds against the conc. gradient with the help of enzymes and organelles .

Passive transport is the transport of compounds through a concentration gradient .

It requires use of cellular energy .

It does not utilise any energy from the cell.

It is used to gather large, insoluble molecules like amino acids inside the cell in large quantities .

Occurs till equilibrium is achieved .

For Example - It transports sugar , proteins and lipids through protein pumps.

For Example - Osmosis , Filtration , Diffusion
