What is Petroleum?
It is an oil obtained from rocks inside the earth
It is thick,dark coloured liquid and has an unpleasant smell.
It is used to make products like Diesel and Petrol
Where is Petroleum found?
It is found deep inside the earth between 2 layers of impervious rocks
(The rocks which do not allow oil to pass through them are called impervious rocks)
It is found above water as petroleum is lighter than water and floats over it
Earlier, petroleum oil wells were found only in land, now many oil wells are found in sea also
Oil wells are drilled to extract petroleum and natural gas
How is Petroleum formed?
It was formed from organisms living in sea
When they die,their bodies settle at bottom of ocean
These get covered with sand and clay
In millions of years,these dead organisms get converted into petroleum
This is due to high temperature, high pressure and absence of air
