Synthetic fibres are fibres made by human beings. They are based on polymers and are stronger than natural fibers
Different types of Synthetic Fibres are
- Rayon
- Nylon
- Polyester
- Acrylic
What is a polymer?
A large unit of chemical substance made up of many small units is called Polymer
Many small unit combine to form large unit of Polymer.
Explanation
The word ‘Poly’ means Many and ‘Mer’ means Part
Hence Polymer means Many Parts (Many parts of small unit combine to form large unit)
Example 1
A synthetic fibre like nylon is a polymer as it is made of many small chemical substances joined together
Example 2
A natural fibre like cotton is also a polymer called "Cellulose",it is made up of large number of glucose units
