Putting seeds in soil is called sowing
How to select seeds for sowing
Good Quality seeds are selected for sowing
They are chosen by putting them in water
If they are of bad quality,they became hollow and float in water
If they are of good quality,they sink in water
What are Different Methods of Sowing?
Traditional method
It is done with the help of ox or bull
Seeds are filled in funnel and passed through sharp ends
Seeds pass through pipes having sharp ends.
These sharp ends pierce soil and seeds are placed there
Sometimes seeds were also sown by hand which was called broadcasting
Modern Method(Using Seed Drill)
Seed Drill is used with help of tractors
Advantages
Seeds are sown uniformly at equal distance.Thus there is no overcrowding and plants get sufficient sunlight and nutrients
Seeds are covered by soil after sowing, thus they are not eaten by birds
Growing Plants in Nursery
Nursery is like a lab for plants
Some seeds are first grown in nursery into seedlings, and then transplanted to field
Example of such plants are
- Paddy(Rice)
- Flowering Plants
- Forests Plants
What is the meaning of transplantation?
The process of transferring seedling(tiny plants) from nursery to main field by hand is called Transplantation
It is done so that only good quality seeds are selected for sowing, also roots of plant can penetrate deeper into soil if it is grown
Example -Paddy and vegetables like tomatoes and Chillies (Mirch)
