Linear Equation in one variable means

  • Only one variable
  • An = sign
  • Highest power 1

Let’s take some examples

x + 1 = 0

Here,

  • There is only 1 variable − x
  • There is an equal sign
  • Highest power of x is 1 (x 1 = x)

∴ It is linear equation in one variable

2x + 3 = 0

Here,

  • There is only 1 variable - x
  • There is an equal sign
  • Highest power of x is 1 (x 1 = x)

∴ It is linear equation in one variable

4x + 5 = 108

Here,

  • There is only 1 variable - x
  • There is an equal sign
  • Highest power of x is 1 (x 1 = x)

∴ It is linear equation in one variable

3x

There is no equal sign

∴ It is not a linear equation in one variable

4x 2 + 1 = 0

Highest power of x = 2

∴ It is not a linear equation in one variable

3x + 2y = 3

Here, we have two variables x & y

∴ It is not a linear equation in one variable
