What are Modals

Modals are helping verbs

They are used to express ability, possibility, permission or obligation.

Example of Modals

Modals for Ability

1. I can do this work
   मैं ये काम कर सकता हूँ
    
2. I could have done this work
   मुझे ये काम कर लेना चाहिए था
    
3. I cannot do this work
   मैं ये काम नहीं कर सकता हूँ
    
4. I could not do this work
   मैं ये काम नहीं कर सकता था

Modals for Possibility

1. I may not come tomorrow
   शायद मैं कल नहीं आऊंगा
    
2. I might not be able to attend the wedding
   हो सकता है मैं शादी में नहीं आ पाउँगा
    
3. You may start dinner, we will be late
   तुम खाना शुरू कर लो, हमें देर हो जायेगी
    
4. You might like to try this
   आपको इसे खेलना चाहिए

Modals for Permission

1. May I go to the washroom?
   क्या मैं शौचलय जा सकता हूँ ?
    
2. Can you spare me for a second? I have some urgent work
   क्या तुम मुझे कुछ टाइम के लिए अकेला छोड़ सकते हो ? मुझे कुछ जरुरी काम हैं
    
3. Can you please excuse us?
   माफ़ कीजिये
    
4. May I sit here?
   क्या मैं यहाँ बैठ सकता हूँ?

   क्या मैं ये कुर्सी ले सकता हूँ ?

Modals for Suggestion (Polite)

1. You should try this dish
   आपको ये पकवान चख़ना चाहिए
    
2. You should meet her once
   आपको उससे एक बार मिलना चाहिए
    
3. You are 30, you should marry now
   तुम तीस के हो, तुम्हे अब शादी कर लेनी चाहिए

Modals for Suggestion (Forceful)

1. You must go there
   तुम्हे वहाँ जाना चाहिए
    
2. You ought to meet me once in a week
   तुम्हें हर हफ़्ते मुझसे मिलते रहना चाहिए
    
3. You must not drink and drive
   तुम्हे पीकर गाड़ी नहीं चलानी चाहिए

Modals for Advice to Avoid Something

1. You shouldn't drive fast
   तुम्हे गाडी तेज़ नहीं चलानी चाहिए
    
2. He shouldn't drink too much
   उसे ज्यादा नहीं पीनी चाहिए
    
3. She shouldn't come late from parties
   उसे पार्टी से देर से नहीं आना चाहिए
    
4. You don't have to tell everyone about your problems
   आपको सबको अपनी परेशानी के बारें में नहीं बताना चाहिए
