A piece of wire of resistance R is cut into three equal parts. These parts are then connected in parallel. If the equivalent resistance of this parallel combination is R1, what is the value of the ratio R1 : R?

Answer:

Given: Resistance of wire=R

If the wire is cut in 3 pieces, the resistance of each piece=R/3

If these pieces are joined in parallel, the equivalent resistance (R1) will be:

1/R1=3/R+3/R+3/R

1/R1=9/R

R1=R/9

Therefore, R1/R=1/9
