Multi-party system:

Several parties compete for power, and more than two parties have a reasonable chance of coming into power either on their strength or in alliance with others.

 

Merits:

  1. This system allows a variety of interests and opinions to enjoy political representation.
  2. People have different representatives to choose from.
  3. Multi-party systems tend to encourage peaceful change of governments . The existence of many parties means that there are other parties waiting for their turn to be voted into power can discourage crude means of gaining political power.

 

De-Merits:

  1. It appears messy and leads to political instability.
  2. The introduction and implementation of a policy or decision may take much time due to the discussions and deliberations of various political parties.
  3. No one party is likely to gain power alone. Therefore, it leads to difficulty in the formation of the government.
