Decentralisation means taking away all power from the Central and State government and delegating it to a third level i.e. local government. The fundamental idea of    decentralization is that many issues and problems are best resolved locally.

Provisions that have been made towards  decentralisation in India after the Constitutional  Amendment in 1992-

  1. Regular elections for local government bodies are now required by the constitution.
  2. Reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs.
  3. One-third of all positions are reserved for women.
  4. Each state has established a separate organisation called the State Election Commission (SEC) to oversee panchayat and municipal elections.
  5. The state government now is required to allocate its resources and authority to the local governments.
