You have been asked to write a comparative analysis of the relationship between Anne Frank and her mother, and Anne Frank and her father, based on the diary entries. Write this analysis in about 120 words, explaining how Anne feels differently about her parents and why.

You may begin this way: One can observe that Anne Frank has a contrasting relationship with her mother and her father, as revealed by her diary entries. Anne Frank and her mother...however,... (Reference - From the Diary of Anne Frank)

Answer as written by the student:

One can observe that Anne Frank has a contrasting relationship with her mother and her father, as revealed by her diary entries. Anne Frank and her mother have a problematic and distant relationship , while Anne Frank and her father have a loving and close relationship.

  • Anne Frank and her mother do not get along well, and often argue or misunderstand each other. Anne feels that her mother does not love or understand her, and that she favors Margot over her. Anne also resents her mother for being cold, strict, and superficial. She thinks that her mother is not a good role model for her, and that she does not have any real feelings or opinions. For example, in the diary entry of 29 October 1942, Anne writes: “I don’t love Mama, I don’t see how I can ever love her.”
  • Anne Frank and her father, on the other hand, have a warm and supportive relationship. Anne admires and respects her father, and considers him as her best friend and confidant. She feels that her father is the only one who truly cares for and understands her, and that he is always gentle, kind, and wise. She also shares with him her interests in literature, history, and politics. For example, in the diary entry of 8 November 1942, Anne writes: “Pim is the best father imaginable.”

Therefore, one can conclude that Anne Frank has a very different relationship with her mother and her father, based on their personalities, attitudes, and interactions.
