1600:

Approximately one-sixth of India’s landmass was under cultivation.
  

1700–1995:

 9.3% of the world’s total area was cleared for industrial use, cultivation of pastures, and fuel wood. 

1850:

The spread of Indian Railways. 

1864:

 The Indian Forest Service was set up by Dietrich Brandis.

1865:

The Indian Forest Act came into being. 
 

1878: 

The Indian Forest Act divided forests into three categories : Reserved, Protected and Village forests.

1906: 

The Imperial Forest Research Institute was set up at Dehradun. 

1946:

The length of railway tracks laid down was over 7,65,000 km.
