The four varnas in the caste system of ancient India were Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras. These varnas were decided on the basis of birth.People of different varnas performed different tasks. 

  • Brahmins : They were expected to study, teach, and preserve the Vedas, which were the sacred texts of Hinduism. They also performed religious ceremonies and sacrifices.

  • Kshatriyas : They were the warriors and rulers who fought wars and administered the state. Their task was to protect the people and uphold justice.

  • Vaishyas : They were the traders and farmers who engaged in trade and agriculture. They were skilled in business and economics.

  • Shudras : They were the workers and servants who served the other three varnas. They worked as artisans, craftsmen, carpenters, blacksmiths, weavers, potters, etc.
