Harappan Cities in Gujarat
Gujarat is home to several Harappan or Indus Valley Civilization sites that provide evidence of the ancient cities and settlements that existed in the region during that time. Some of the major Harappan cities in Gujarat are:
Lothal:
-
Located in the
Bhal region of Gujarat.
-
Lothal was one of the most important Harappan cities in the region.
- It was a major center for trade and commerce, and its well-planned city layout, drainage system, and dockyard are evidence of its advanced urban planning.
Dholavira:
-
Located on
Khadir Bet Island in the Kutch district of Gujarat.
-
Dholavira was a large Harappan city that dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE.
-
It was one of the most important
centers for trade and crafts, and its advanced water management system,
sophisticated architecture, and unique urban planning make it a significant archaeological site.
-
Dholavira was different from the other Indus Cities in that it was divided into not two but three parts -
a citadel, a middle town and a lower town.
-
Each part was
enclosed by a stone wall.
- Many graves have been found here. The excavated graves contain pottery and jewellery.
Gola Dhoro
-
Gola Dhoro is an ancient site
located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, India.
-
It is believed to be a
part of the Indus Valley Civilization,
which was a highly advanced civilization that existed in the Indian subcontinent around 2500-2000 BCE.
-
At Gola Dhoro, archaeologists have discovered the
remains of several ancient structures, including houses, walls, and a citadel.
-
These structures were made of
mud bricks and were arranged in a planned manner,
indicating that the people who lived here were highly organized and skilled in city planning.
-
The discovery of various artifacts such as
pottery, seals, and beads,
has provided insight into the daily life and culture of the people who lived here.
- These artifacts suggest that the people of Gola Dhoro were skilled in craftsmanship , trade, and agriculture.
