  • The Constitution is a set of fundamental rules and principles that define the nature, functions, and limits of a government and the rights and duties of its citizens. It is the supreme law of the land that guides the political system and ensures democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

  • Different types of constitutions are:
    • Written and unwritten constitutions : A written constitution is one that is codified in a single document or a set of documents. It is usually drafted by a constituent assembly or a constitutional convention. It has clear and precise language and is legally enforceable. Examples: United States, India, France.

    • An unwritten constitution is one that is not codified in a single document or a set of documents. It is based on customs, traditions, conventions, precedents, and statutes. It is flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. Examples: United Kingdom, New Zealand, Israel.

    • A flexible constitution is one that can be easily amended by the ordinary legislative process. It does not require any special procedure or majority to change its provisions. It can respond quickly to the changing needs and aspirations of the society. Examples: United Kingdom, France, New Zealand.

    • A rigid constitution is one that can be amended only by a special procedure or majority that is different from the ordinary legislative process. It requires the consent of more than one organ or level of government to change its provisions. It provides stability and continuity to the political system. Examples: United States, India, Switzerland.
