  • The lines of latitude measure how far a place is from the equator , in degrees north or south. The equator is the most important line of latitude, as it divides the earth into two equal halves called hemispheres .

  • The lines of longitude measure how far a place is from the prime meridian , in degrees east or west. The prime meridian is the most important line of longitude, as it passes through Greenwich, a borough of London.
