  • The lines of latitudes are also called parallels because they run east to west , parallel to the equator . The equator is the most important line of latitude, as it divides the Earth into two equal halves called hemispheres. The equator has a latitude of 0°.
  • The lines of latitudes are imaginary lines that divide the Earth horizontally , or from side to side. They measure how far a place is from the equator, in degrees north or south. For example, if a place is at 30°N latitude, it means it is 30 degrees north of the equator. If a place is at 45°S latitude, it means it is 45 degrees south of the equator.
