What is the bhabar?

  • The rivers(  Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra along with their tributaries) , after descending from mountains, deposit pebbles in a narrow belt lying parallel to slopes of the shiwaliks. 
  • The Bhabar is a narrow belt about 8-16km wide running in East to west direction along the foot of the Shiwaliks of Himalayan Range.
  • The Bhabar belt is comparatively narrow in the east and extensive in the western and north-western hilly region.
  •  The area is not suitable for agriculture and only big trees with large roots thrive in this belt.
