In order to come up with a solution that would allow everyone to live together within the same country, they changed their constitution four times between 1970 and 1993. They came up with an extremely creative solution that is unique to every other nation. Key elements of the Belgian model are as follows- 

  • The number of Dutch and French-speaking ministers shall be equal in the central government. 
  • Powers of the central government have been given to state governments of the two regions of the country.
  • Brussels was given a separate governmen t in which both, the French and the Dutch communities had equal representation.
  • Provision of ‘ Community Government ’- elected by people belonging to one language.
