Iron
is a metal that
undergoes rusting
when
exposed to air and water
.
Iron (fe ) + oxygen ( O 2 from air)+ water (H 2 O) —-> rust (Fe 2 O 3 ) from oxide - Stainless steel is called “stainless” because it does not rust when exposed to the elements due to its chemical composition.
- Due to this property, we prefer stainless steel for certain applications over Iron.
Why do we sometimes prefer stainless steel over iron?
