What causes hiccups or a choking sensation?
Answer:
Sometimes when we eat in a hurry, talk or laugh while eating we may get hiccups or choke. This is caused when food particles enter the windpipe .
- The wind pipe runs adjacent to the food pipe .
- During the act of swallowing, a flap-like valve called epiglottis closes the passage of the windpipe and glides food into the food pipe .
- If food particles enter the windpipe, we feel choked and get hiccups or cough.
