A mixture of oxygen and ethyne is burnt for welding. Can you tell why a mixture of ethyne and air is not used?
Answer:
- For the purpose of welding, very high temperatures are required .
- A mixture of oxygen and ethyne is used for welding because, in the abundance of oxygen , complete combustion takes place giving rise to a lot of heat.
- On the other hand, if we burn ethylene in air, incomplete combustion will take place due to limited oxygen supply .
- Therefore, a sooty flame will be produced and the temperature will not rise to the required amount.
