(a) Why most of the carbon compounds are poor conductor of electricity?
(b) Write the name and structure of a saturated compound in which the carbon atoms are arranged in a ring. Give the number of single bonds present in this compound.
Answer
(a)
For an atom to conduct electricity, free electrons are required.
Carbon has 4 valence electrons and it forms 4 covalent bonds. Since these bonds are formed by sharing of electrons, no free electrons are present to conduct electricity. So, carbon compounds do not conduct electricity.
(b)
Cyclohexane is a saturated cyclic compound i.e. the ring. Its structure is as follows
The total number of single bonds in cyclohexane is 18.
