Computer Science - Class 12
Chapter 11 - Data Communication

Write two advantages of using an optical fibre cable over an ethernet cable to connect two service stations, which are 200m away from each other.

Answer:

  • Speed - Optical Fibre is faster than ethernet.
  • Reliability - Optical Fibre is more reliable than ethernet cables.

Additional points:

  • Higher Bandwidth - Optical fibres offer more bandwidth to transmit more data. Whereas, ethernet cables have limited bandwidth.
  • Lower Attenuation - Attenuation is the weakening of signal strength due to distance or external factors. Optical Fibre is not affected by external factors like weather and it is not affected by electromagnetic interference since it is an insulator. Ethernet cables, on the other hand, are more susceptible to attenuation.
