(B) Which one of the following would feel attraction when placed in magnetic field: Co 2+ , Ag + ,Ti 4+ , Zn 2+

Answer

Transition elements can be divided into 2 types based on their reaction to being placed in a magnetic field.

  • Paramagnetic elements experience attraction in a magnetic field.
  • They have unpaired electrons in their d-orbitals .
  • Diamagnetic substances do not react to a magnetic field.
  • They do not have unpaired electrons in their d-orbitals.

Co 2+ has three unpaired electrons so it would be paramagnetic in nature, hence Co 2+ ion would be attracted to magnetic field

Ag + does not have unpaired electrons so it would be diamagnetic in nature, hence Ag + ion would not be attracted to the magnetic field.

Ti 4+ does not have unpaired electrons so it would be diamagnetic in nature, hence Ti 4+ ion would not be attracted to the magnetic field.

Zn 2+ does not have unpaired electrons so it would be diamagnetic in nature, hence Zn 2+ ion would not be attracted to the magnetic field.
