Write equations for the reactions of
(ii) calcium and potassium with water
Answer
(ii) Calcium and Potassium with water
Calcium
Calcium reacts with cold water to form Calcium Hydroxide and Hydrogen gas .
- Heat formed in this reaction is less violent and does not produce sufficient heat for hydrogen gas to catch fire.
- The piece of Calcium metal floats in water , because bubbles of hydrogen gas formed in the reaction, stick to the surface.
Potassium
Potassium reacts violently with cold water to form Potassium Hydroxide , Hydrogen Gas and heat energy.
- The reaction is very exothermic and produces large amounts of heat.
