Question 48 The point on x axis equidistant from I and E is (a) (1/2, 0) (b) (0, (−1)/2) (c) ((−1)/2, 0) (d) (0, 1/2) Since required point is on x-axis It’s y-coordinate is 0 Let X (x, 0) be the required point Since point X (x, 0) is equidistant from points I (−1, 1) and E (2, 1) IX = EX √(( 𝑥 −(−1) )2+(1−0)2) = √((𝑥−2)2+(0−1)2) √(( 𝑥+1 )2+12) = √((𝑥−2)2+12) Squaring both sides ( 𝑥+1)2+12 = ( 𝑥−2)2+12 ( 𝑥+1)2 = ( 𝑥−2)2 𝑥^2+1+2𝑥=𝑥^2+4−4𝑥 1+2𝑥=4−4𝑥 4𝑥+2𝑥=4−1 6𝑥=3 𝑥=3/6 𝒙=𝟏/𝟐 ∴ Required coordinates = (x, 0) = (𝟏/𝟐, 𝟎) So, the correct answer is (a)
