Latent Heat of Vaporization
During the process of conversion of 1 kg of a substance from its liquid state to gaseous state, at the boiling point, the temperature remains constan t. This is known as l atent heat of vaporization.
The word ‘latent’ means hidden; till the liquid is entirely converted to the gaseous phase, the temperature remains constant as the heat is used as the energy required in the conversion. It refers to the change in enthalpy of the substance.
Latent Heat of Fusion
During the process of conversion of 1kg of a substance from its solid state to liquid state, at the melting point, the temperature remains constant. This is known a s latent heat of fusion.
Till the solid is completely converted to the liquid phase, the temperature remains constant. This is because the heat is used as energy in the conversion. It refers to the change in enthalpy of the substance.
