The refractive index of diamond is 2.42. What is the meaning of this statement?

We know that

Refractive index of the medium = Speed of light in vacuum or air / Speed of light of the medium

 

Given

Refractive index of diamond = 2.42

Hence,

2.42 = Speed of light in vacuum or air / Speed of light in diamond

 

Hence, refractive index of diamond is 2.42 means that 

the ratio of the Speed of light in vacuum or air to the Speed of light in diamond is 2.42.
